Honestly, some of my best stories have come from interviewing victims. When I call them, I tell them that I don't want to focus on the tragedy as much as honoring the person who died in the tragedy. When I write the story, I focus on the life that the victim led and what he/she meant to his/her family and the community. That's what's important to me, and I feel like readers appreciate that.

You can't be too careful when it comes to interviewing victims for their sake as well as your own. Although most interviewers seek permission to interview the subject, it should be noted that "victims" that have been interviewed are the number one source of lawsuits against the media. Make sure you really, really need that story before you consider talking to victims, they are a minefield which offers little in return for the risks they present. Thanks Ed Smith conductknockoutbroadcastinterviews.com/blog.
